Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis

South Africa recorded 12,000 cases of Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) per year (out of a total of 400,000 infections). To try to stop this "major public health problem", the country is testing a new antibiotic, Bedaquiline (Sirturo).

    Antibiotic and epilepsy

Scientists from Great Ormond Street Hospital in London (UK) warned against erythromycin, an antibiotic prescribed against urinary or respiratory infections. In pregnant women, it would promote infant epilepsy.

    US balance

Bacterial resistance caused 23,000 deaths and 2 million infections per year in the United States. To fight, Washington wants to cut "50% of the inappropriate use of antibiotics in ambulatory care" and "20% in hospitals."

    American Plan

By 2020, the US wants a 60% reduction of nosocomial infections resistant Enterobacteriaceae, 50% C difficile infections and septicemia S aureus methicillin and 35% pseudomonas infections (see document).

    Food and bacteria

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), foods containing bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemicals are responsible for more than 200 diseases (diarrhea, cancers) causing 2 million deaths per year.

    Tobacco and bacteria

According to a study published in the journal Infection and Immunity by researchers at the University of California, cigarette smoke increases the resistance of bacteria such as Staphylococcus Aureus methicillin-resistant (SAMR).
